Summer Music Camp guide

I am faculty at Bryce Canyon Music Camp, and for the past 2 years, I have taken a group of students from Vista up with me to this camp.  Having this camp close by and for this affordable cost is a great opportunity.  Previously, to gain an experience like this, students would have to travel to Salt Lake City and attend the Intermountain Suzuki String Institute and pay far more.  You can check out this camp at www.intermountainsuzukistringinstitute.com/ It is also a great camp and attendance at either camp is highly recommended.

The students that have attended have had a great time and learned a lot. This camp is good for students that are in Suzuki books 1-4, or the typical Vista student from beginner up. They have scholarships available based on need and talent.  There is an advanced string camp, but historically they have not had many advanced players.

Tori Odom is going up and has volunteered to provide dinners and help supervise students.  The students stay in housing provided by a local family, separated by boys and girls, with adult supervision. More information about lodging, food and transportation available on request.

If you are able to take your student up and stay, you camp in several beautiful camping spots or get a room at a local motel. Parents can attend the camp with their student or hike in one of the nations most beautiful areas. Dates are June 3-7. Please visit brycecanyonmusiccamp.com/ for more information and to register.

Tuacahn offers the Symphonic Institute under Jason Bonham, which a great high-level program. Students must be on at least a Suzuki book 2 level.  This camp is great for high level students that are taking privately. Find out more information at http://www.tuacahn.org/events/?page_id=203.  The dates are June 25-30.

12:00 Chamber Orchestra, after school, performing Spring

Field trip permission slip forms

Each student will need to turn in a completed and signed field trip form to be able to attend the trip. A 2-sided field trip permission slip is being sent home to you with this letter.  One side is a basic permission slip which includes transportation on the bus. The other side includes transportation on the bus and also in an individuals’ car.

Vista will be transporting all of the students to Desert Hills High School, but parents will be responsible for transporting students home from Desert Hills. Mrs. Andrus will be arranging carpools.  Let me know if you would be willing to take other students home that live in your area. You will also be required to take an online test and fill out the required paperwork.

If you plan on sending your student home with another parent, please sign the permission slip that includes transportation by car.  You must arrange the carpools with me, don’t assume that your student will automatically have a ride home. I will not put your student in a carpool unless I hear from you.

Parent Chaperones needed

I need 15 parent volunteers!  I will have a specific schedule and list of duties for each parent volunteer. Plan on being available from 9:30am to 4:00pm that day. Parents will ride the bus, supervise the students while watching other performances in the auditorium and in the warm up room, and coordinate transportation.

Parents are needed to videotape and take still pictures of the students.

Uniform

All students will wear the white Vista Orchestra polo and navy pants with school uniform shoes, as nice as possible. Girls may wear navy skirts with navy tights, but I would prefer navy pants.  We will be judged on our appearance and performance attire, so please plan ahead.

Student Conduct

Students will be expected to abide by the following rules of conduct at the performance:

  1. No loud or boisterous activity in the concert hall, halls of the school building, or warm-up room.
  2. No cat-calls or boos during applause.
  3. Stay with your group at all times. Students may not leave with their friends to roam the halls or go outside.
  4. Ask permission to use the restroom or drinking fountain.
  5. Students will be expected to complete and turn in rating sheets on orchestras that they watch.  Parent volunteers will be distributing forms and pencils.
  6. No talking while in the audience during performances.
  7. Abide by all specific performance protocol such as stand and sit when instructed, instruments up and proper rest position, good posture, correct concert attire, etc.
  8. Be respectful to all others. Parent volunteers, other students and SUPAF faculty should all be treated with the utmost respect.
  9. Respect facilities and the property of others.   No vandalism or other improper use of any school facilities.  Do not touch instruments that do not belong to you.
  10. Be responsible for yourself. Pay attention so that you don’t get separated from your group or forget anything.
  11. Follow any other rules or instructions that are posted on field trip premises or on bus. Use general common sense to behave your very best.

Parents may be asked to remove their student from this activity if their behavior is deemed inappropriate.

By signing the field trip permission form you agree to abide by these rules.

Lunch

Students will need to bring a sack lunch.

Instruments

If your student needs to borrow a school instrument, they may check one out.  Please bring it back the next day to check in.  Since we will not be coming back to the school after the concert, you will be responsible for transportation and care of the instrument overnight.
